Espresso Supply 3-1/2-Gram Burnaid Gel, Box of 25 Review

Espresso Supply 3-1/2-Gram Burnaid Gel, Box of 25When it comes to burn cream there isn't much to say, it really only works or it doesn't.This however, is not a cream, it is a gel and it works great!I received several packets of this gel in a first aid kit I purchased a few years back.I do not get burned often so I had never had the chance to use it but my girlfriend received a very large very deep burn that covered the majority of her hand that caused her great pain. After slathering a packet of this gel on her hand she told me that almost immediately the pain stopped.I expected the burn to take at least a week or two to heal but the next morning every last spot of redness and pain were gone almost as if the gel soaked it right out of her hand.I would definitely recommend this product to anyone, I don't see how you could go wrong.

Mr. Coffee ECMP50 Espresso/ Cappuccino Maker Review

Mr. Coffee ECMP50 Espresso/ Cappuccino MakerLike most who purchased this product, it was my first espresso maker. And I found out quickly that hunting for these things can be overwhelming! I purchased it at my local Target for $79.99 for convenience in case I had to return it -- with all of the mixed reviews out there, I was incredibly weary of choosing one! However, I will most likely not need to do so. It is perfect for all of my needs!

PROS:
1. Incredibly easy to use! Directions and trouble-shooting pages in manual are simple and helpful.
2. Compact size, looks nice sitting on the counter.
3. Easy clean-up. All parts that need to be cleaned detach easily.
4. A standard sized coffee cup will fit under the spout -- not so with many models!
5. The steam feature is simple, fairly powerful, and works well. No problems here.
6. As long as you get a good batch of coffee grounds, this machine can turn it into delicious espresso!

CONS:
1. I have been experiencing a small leak onto my counter after use. I haven't caught it in the act yet, but if I return to the kitchen a few hours later, there is a wet spot near the machine. I read another review that mentioned the same thing, so it might be a universal issue with this product. However, it is a small leak, and not enought to cause a real problem in my opinion.
2. I would suggest making 2-3 cups before wasting any milk product on your first trial. This model does not have an automatic drip feature and you will need to manually tell it when to stop pouring. If you are not used to this, you might end up with a few nasty batches on your first try. No biggie. Just watch the color of the drip. It starts out as a medium brown, and changes to a much lighter brown if left alone. I would recommend shutting it off a second or so after it changes to the lighter brown. I have made perfect batches every time by this method. This all takes place over several seconds, so keep an eye out.

YOU MIGHT NEED TO KNOW:
It mentions this in the manual, but make sure to get the right size of grounds. About the consistency of salt. I would recommend griding your own either at home with a grinder or at the store at a grinding station. They taste better for one, and you won't waste your money on a mystery bag that doesn't work well with your machine.

Also, it does not come with a frothing pitcher. You will need to buy one separately. I purchased mine at Bed Bath and Beyond -- a Krups one, stainless, about $10? It fits fine. Just make sure you don't get one that is too deep, or the froth wand will not reach the milk. It is a countertop model after all. If you don't want to use as much milk you can turn the pitcher at an angle.

That's it! Definitely more pros than cons. I feel that for the price I paid, I could not have hoped for a better quality machine. I would highly recommend this model if you want something easy and you don't require tons of frills. If you want something more frilly, go ahead and spend $300 to $3000 on one. But I purchased an espresso maker to SAVE time and money (so long, Starbucks!), and this one's just right for me!

Krups XP 4000 Espresso Machine, Black Review

Krups XP 4000 Espresso Machine, BlackWell, I don't usually review products...cause some people who do are either way too passionate about their foam, or their kitchen or their whatever....and I don't care to be lumped into the whole lot.

Anyway, I just got the machine. I'm a darn tough person to please, and I'm fairly pleased. No hassles really. Made good n' hot lattes etc. no problem frothing milk etc. My only hangup is that there is no little lever or something to hold down the filter when cleaning the coffee out of it. I used to hold my old one down with my thumb and hit it against something to jar out the used coffee grounds.

The unit is really heavy, which tells me there is something inside...not just a $100 piece of plastic. Compared to my old Krups pump model, it is much more solid, heats everything more quickly and is easier to use than expected.

Let's face it. Anyone taking time to go through the hassle to actually make cappucinos at home is too spoiled for their own good anyway. I'm just thankful to be able to whip up a fantastic espresso or latte or whatever with this machine.

Now someone who really, really knows everything there is to know about crema and the oxygen content of "perfect" foam and whatnot...can write a review more helpful than mine. Enjoy.

Saeco 4045 Vienna Plus 15-Bar-Pump Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Silver Review

Saeco 4045 Vienna Plus 15-Bar-Pump Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, SilverVienna Plus is my third fully automatic machine. I loved my first, Saeco original Vienna, hated the second, Saeco Incanto classic. The original Vienna worked for 3 years every day, making consistently good espresso before the pump gave. I should have paid for repair, but I succumbed to that stainless steel twinkle and went for Saeco Incanto classic. More expensive for sure. Worse, better said inconsistent, coffee quality, constant small problems relating to built quality concerning the brew group, the grinder and the steamer wand. After a year of irritation a pump seal has failed while making espresso, nothing like a small explosion in the kitchen in the morning, I tell ya. Well, gone back to the trusted Vienna, now withthe plus in the name. Good old days are here again .... Compared to previous- it is a lot quieter, when both grinding and steaming, it is also a lot quicker to warm up then before, steam is ready a mere 15 seconds after pushing the button. Espresso has a beautiful rich crema right out of the box, I didn't have to experiment with grind setting at all. The steaming wand (Panarello) has been redesigned and is now foolproof maker of perfect frothed foam. For the newbie I would like to add that I spent a lot of effort to find the right roast - tasted more than a few before I settled on one (Peerless Coffee Espressp Perfection) that I buy now in 5 lb. bags and keep in the freezer. I should for fairness add that I never want any other coffee through the machine like some decaf or flavored stuff, so I don't miss the alternate ground coffee option that Incanto had. My priority has always been flavor and consistency and that the Vienna Plus delivers. My friends drive miles to "see me" and, by the way, get a cup of espresso, praising each one as "this is the best espresso in the world".If that is what you desire, don't get mesmerized by stainless steel shine or computerized display magic and save yourself some money by getting this machine. You won't regret it. And I am unanimous in that. ;)

Kalorik EXP 25022 800W 4-Cup Espresso Maker Review

Kalorik EXP 25022 800W 4-Cup Espresso MakerNice design, well-made, easy to clean, makes mediocre moka (not real espresso) quickly, and is very quiet. Not enough pressure to produce any "crema", and doesn't heat the water sufficiently. Here is what I found that helps a bit:

(1) grind the coffee extremely fine, tamp and re-tamp hard.

(2) pre-heat the water in a "HotPot" or something similar -- it helps a great deal to make better moka.

Not quite as good as my old "Maxim" espresso-maker, but a lot faster and quieter.

Krups XP4050 1200-Watt 15-Bar-Pump Programmable Espresso Machine Review

Krups XP4050 1200-Watt 15-Bar-Pump Programmable Espresso MachineI must start with saying that this is my second XP4050 in one month, the first suffering from two problems. One problem was the same that others have mentioned here, when water stops coming out of the filter head and instead just dumps into the drip tray from an apparent overflow-type valve in the bottom of the machine. This only happened once, corrected itself, and never happened again. The second problem was that I noticed a small amount of water occasionally leaking from the buttons on the front and the stainless portion on the front of the machine would also get VERY hot.I believe these were one problem, possibly the brewing portion leaking.

I contacted Amazon online and was shocked at the ease and speed of getting a replacement model. At no charge to me, including shipping, I had a brand new XP4050 within 3 days.

The new model works perfect.I am a somewhat new espresso afficienado, having been making my own at home for only about 2 years. This is my second machine, my first being a Krups Gusto that recently died.I decided on the XP4050 after a great deal of research and comparing features versus cost. The price I got this model through Amazon was literally half what I was looking at with other brands.

As far as use of the machine, it couldn't be easier.I use mostly pods but have tried grounds with equally easy and great tasting shots. The three different filter baskets for brewing are held in the handle firmly, which was an issue in my old Krups Gusto (I accidently threw away the single shot filter basket). The frother performs very well although I have not tried the attachment for pulling the milk from a separate container. As others have said, make sure you keep an eye on your drip tray, it does tend to fill quickly.I empty mine every 4-6 shots.

Overall, even considering my initial "problem" model, I am extremely happy with the XP4050.It's a great looking, inexpensive, easy to use machine that consistently puts out quality shots of espresso.I would recommend this model to either new beginners or someone looking to step up a little.

Gaggia 11400 Achille Lever-Operated Espresso Machine Review

Gaggia 11400 Achille Lever-Operated Espresso MachineI received this beautiful espresso machine in June.It is a stunning work of functional art.Out of the box it had two problems: a leak in the boiler water level gauge and the steam valve would not turn off completely.I called the number given for service and reached Importika, the importer of the machine. The people I dealt with were not timely in responses to phone calls and e-mails.I had to be persistent beyond reasonableness to receive the necessary approval to send it in for service.I was told repeatedly that they would notify me when the part arrived from Italy. They never did that.I had to contact them. Then I had to pay $50 for shipping. The only service center that had the part was on the east coast, I live on the west coast. The west coast service center did not have the part. That repair took 3 1/2 weeks from the time it left my door until it returned. In early December the machine started dripping uncontrollably from the showerhead.Again, I had to deal with the same people at Importika.Again, I had to be the one to continually contact them even though I was told several times that they would contact me.They never did. Finally, they told me it had to be sent in for repairs.Since this was the second time it was being sent in for repair in 6 months, I made two requests of them.First, I asked that they send to me a prepaid shipping label, and secondly, that they replace the machine with a new one. These requests, in my experience, are not unreasonable, especially given the over $1,000 price tag. That was at the end of December. It is now Feb. 7 and they have not responded. For the cost of this machine, I expect exceptional service if it is needed.I have NOT received exceptional service.I would not even call it acceptable. The machine has stopped dripping in the mean time and I'm hoping that it has miraculously cured itself.
The machine makes wonderful espresso.I've made espresso for years with other Gaggia machines and it took weeks of experimenting to get the correct combination of grind fineness and tamping pressure.Once I had it figured out, it makes the best espresso I've had from a home brew machine.I use Illy Caffe beans.Using it will build your biceps.
In summary, it's a fantastic machine with a couple of realiability issues and absolutely awful customer service for after the purchase repairs.Cross your fingers that you won't need to do so.

Product Description:
The designers at Gaggia know a good thing when they see it. Just one look at this lever operated espresso machine and you'll journey back to the golden age of espresso, when Gaggia founder Achille Gaggia was king. This vintage-looking espresso machine is a real throwback, and with its cylindrical body, stainless steel housing, and domed water reservoir, the Achille is sure to grab your attention. To operate the Achille, simply raise the lever on the front of the machine and a piston inside the group is raised, allowing water under pressure to infuse the coffee in the filter holder. When you lower the lever, the pressure causes the piston to force water through the coffee and into your cup. And with the Achille's easy-to-use Turbo frothing wand, your friends will not only be impressed with your old-world brewing skills, but also with the decadent, creamy froth you are able to create. When you have a Gaggia Achille on your counter, it makes a bold statement: you are serious about making coffee. The Gaggia Achille comes with both single and double shot filter baskets, as well as a tamper.

Gaggia New Espresso Color Espresso Machine Red - Gaggia 12700 Review

Gaggia New Espresso Color Espresso Machine Red - Gaggia 12700This snazzy-looking espresso machine had our hopes up. As coffee roasters and coffee students we liked previous reviewers who talked this machine up. The first brewing attempt produced a bland drink with no crema as promised by Whole Latte Love.I then spent an afternoon adjusting variables. Our coffee is one day after roasting with a fine grind by Rocky Rancilio which cost more than the Gaggia Color.Eventually I took the temperature of the water exiting the brew head.160 Fahrenheit. Water this cool can't make coffee by any method. Long conversations with Whole latte Love had them admitting that we knew more about coffee than them. Promises of full refund did not pan out although we did force them into issuing a return shipping label.
We are amazed that a reputable company like Gaggia can desgn a technically deficient machine like this. We would not deal with Whole Latte Love again although they are not necessarily an intentionally bad organization.

Jura-Capresso 13185 Impressa F7 Espresso Machine, Silver Metallic Review

Jura-Capresso 13185 Impressa F7 Espresso Machine, Silver MetallicAfter 7 years or so of using a bulletproof Starbucks Barista which produced great espresso and copious microfoam, I bought this machine for my wife for Christmas (although she swears it was yet another gift to myself). The build quality and ease of use is great. The espresso is very good (but not up to the standards of a well pulled shot off a semi-auto).Nevertheless, the lack of any mess and pushbutton convenience outweighs any complaints about the quality of the shot - don't get me wrong, it pulls a very nice shot. What it doesnt do well is create the beautiful microfoam an experienced user can get using a traditional steam wand. All of these super-autos have that annoying steam-assist wand which is supposed to require no skillto create foam.Unfortunately all it does it create these large crappy bubbles and very little foam.To make matters worse, the side steam holes get clogged very easily and then the result is NO FOAM. I called wholelattelove and Capresso looking for a solution and they each had no clue either (a) how to solve the problem, or (b) why in the world I didnt like the crappy large soap bubble excuse for microfoam.Well for $8 I found a Krups metal steam tip off the net (go to culinaryparts.com for a $1.99 steam tip plus $6 shipping) and screwed it on to the end of the metal wand after having discarded the useless steaming aid sleeve and old plastic tip, and VOILA!-- awesome foam made in half the time I could do the same thing with my old Starbucks Barista. These machines all have a Thermoblock for steaming unlike the traditional boiler on a better semi-auto.Nevertheless it is enough and the foam is first rate as I said. The only other thing to be aware of is that these machines cant use my beloved Peats coffee beans - too oily and they get stuck in the hopper- so I am still searching for a good dark roast which is not too oily. But for now after a month of use, I am happy with the espresso and the foam and delighted to make my morning cap with a minimum of effort. The F7 in particular is a great machine as against the other Juras. It is more programmible than the E* and much simpler to use (and smaller footprint) than the pricier units.I almost bought the F9 but there is just too much to think about on that machine and the bright chrome is a bit too shiny and pretentious. The F7 is the perfect mix of functionality and understated good looks. It is also the newest technology from Jura so it has some small touches that the F9 doesnt have, such as a 120 second steam timer versus the 60 second timer on the F9.

Update to the above review:

After many more months of use I am loving the Jura F7, and I found the beans to use: Blue Bottle Coffee Hayes Valley Espresso. Not too oily but very flavorful. Perfect for this machine. Better than Peats, and definitely fresher. I am not going to list their website here cause I dont want to look like a shill for them. But you can find them, I am confident. They will mail out to you for no additional cost.

By the way, the review above that says the F7 is a shinier version of the E8 is incorrect. The basic mechanism may be the same, but the programming functions and other nice features are significantly different. If you're already spending this much coin, the F7 is a better deal than the E8. Just my humble opinion.

Gaggia 12500 Baby Twin Espresso Machine with Dual Heating System, Stainless Steel Review

Gaggia 12500 Baby Twin Espresso Machine with Dual Heating System, Stainless SteelBaby Gaggia Twin
I am on my third Baby Gaggia Twin since February and the third one does seem to be the charm. The first machine had an impotent steamer and was sent back, the second, the steam wand came off entirely.I did notice that happened to another reviewer but went with this machine as it was in my price range and I felt lucky.

The first one was purchased through Essential Espresso (avoid at all costs) who when I called to address the problem were very "We don't want to hear it, talk to the manufacturer" even though their site boasts a 30 day no hassle return. I wish I read the reviews on them before purchase. I won't go into every detail but dealing with them was so unpleasant and they took so long to do anything that I decided that I would get my replacement from BBandBeyond, where I learned they would price-match even with a 300 dollar difference and free shipping!!
So, BBandBeyond gave me a truly hassle free exchange for the second machine and it's faulty steam wand and now I am reasonably happy with the machine. The customer service there is among the best I have experienced.

The steamer takes a little getting used to. You need to purge it of water till the lights flash, turn it off and then back on again, keeping the wand out of your milk until it is up to "full steam" then turn it off again and put it in your milk pitcher. It sounds more painful than it is and all happens in about a minute and change.Pros: Looks great, seems sturdy, is easy to use and clean, heats up quickly, makes very good espresso
The steamer takes a little getting used to. You need to purge it of water till the lights flash, turn it off and then back on again, keeping the wand out of your milk until it is up to "full steam" then turn it off again and put it in your milk pitcher. It sounds more painful than it is and all happens in about a minute and change.

Cons: There is a smell from the steam wand, it gets less over time and I am told that running descaler through it will eliminate it. (Why couldn't they do that?) The group head is configured in such a way that you cannot really fill the portafilter full of coffee and have to leave a bit of room at the top. This is a slight bummer for me as I like my morning coffee a nice long pull and with our former machine could get enough coffee for 2 such pulls at one time for both me and the hubby. True, it is noGreek tragedy to pull 2 shots but just not as convenient. If you are pulling for one, there is no problem.

However, Gaggia itself and its U.S. representative,[...]are lacking in customer service in my opinion.
After receiving my third machine, I sent an email asking about a pressurized portafilter for the machine. I also added that it would be nice of them to offer some discount on same taking into to consideration the inconvenience I had been through having 2 defective machines.
Both Importika in the U.S. and Gaggia in Italy totally ignored this. I would not buy from them again for that reason. To me, it would be a no brainer to comp a relatively inexpensive item to compensate for the inconvenience and leave the customer feeling that you value their business and regret the inconvenience. They obviously don't.
It does take away some of the enjoyment of owning it
UPDATE
I no longer own this machine, it started leaking around the grouphead and after replacing the gasket and the filter basket to no avail, I returned it and went with another model. Various forums have given consistently good reviews to the Classic which is not a "snazzy" looking or programmable to your preferred size of shot. So far I am happy with it. You can tell right away that the steamer is better the crema is a litle thicker (probably because whatever was causing the leaking was not providing the proper pressure for "expression" of flavor. We decided to get a grinder also as this machine likes a finer grind than I can get in some places. After a few weeks, I will write a separate review for it but after 3 Baby Twins in 5 months, I can not recommend them from anything but a decorative standpoint.

Breville Barista Express Metal Espresso Coffee Maker BES860XL Review

Breville Barista Express Metal Espresso Coffee Maker BES860XLI spent my Christmas 2009 reviewing expresso machines. I had just returned from a trip to Europe and finally was going to fold and get an expresso machine.I missed the expresso from Italy and France.1oz of crema delight.

So, I liked the Breville from all the reviews but was worried about some of the negativity on the "wet puck" I had read. All the reviews mentioned excellent coffee though, so it was on my short list.

Then I saw the Breville BES860XL, also known as the Barista Express Programmable Expresso. From the looks you can tell this unit has exchanged the hot water dispenser for a bean grinder. This unit is a fully automatic expresso machine with the super automatic feature of grinding a pre-measure of beans for your brew.Note, it is not a super automatic machine as you still need to manually mount the portafilter into the group head, and clean the filter afterwards. This is as automatic as you will want to go if you want to really control your coffee.

But, let me walk you through the pleasure:
1. the box.this has excellent graphics -- even as you open, the getting started guide and pictures guide you along. The unit removes easily.
2. The tamper is magnetically held in place on the front of the machine -- you can use it in place or remove for manual tamping.
3. New: -there is a dry puck feature now for all the fussy reviews -- this removes excess water so you get, a dry puck
- an excellent burr grinder -- you can dismantle this for cleaning, and it has a wide range of control
- for those that previously complained about the "cheat" dual wall filters -- the unit comes with single and double dual wall AND single wall filters
- there is a hideaway storage tray to hold all the small goodies
4. Steaming -- excellent steam temperature and pressure -- works very well with the provided frothing jug, very minimal excess water to start
5. The real test.I am using the dual wall filters, and the Illy whole expresso beans I got from Italy were made into pure heavenly expresso. Nice crema. This is the real thing.

This is one finely engineered machine. From a mechanically inclined electrical engineer to the folks at Breville: you have created an exceptionally functional piece that does the job.Did I mention it is beautiful on the counter as well?I have it on an island, no bad sides.

Drawbacks: none.BUT, when making a real expresso shot, make sure you pre-warm your demitasse.Otherwise the expresso will heat up your cup and your coffee will not be hot.I run a water cycle first into my cup to heat up the group head and the cup.

In my opinion this is the best buy in the market under $1500.At the office, daily I use a super automatic machine that is at that top end.

Francis Francis! 206002 Espresso Machine, X6 Trio Review

Francis Francis 206002 Espresso Machine, X6 TrioThis is the first espresso machine I bought, had it for about 6 mos now. And so far, I really couldn't be happier with it for what it is - a great looking, reasonably priced machine to make a couple drinks.

I'm still learning, but I think we get pretty great tasting coffee from this. In my heart, I wanted a machine that could also do grinds. But I don't miss paying extra for a grinder or dealing with the likely mess I would create in my kitchen. So - the pods are nice, and the trio of setting is pretty interesting. I've found that the lungo setting works pretty well if you don't want to being using 2 pods for each drink. The machine performs really well. Warmup is only a few minutes, and going from brew to frothing temperature is actually really quick. You can only pull 1 shot at a time, but for my usual routine - 4 shots and frothing - this works pretty well.

This is just a great looking machine, very attractive on your kitchen counter (we bought it in white). At first, we weren't sure about it being made from plastic - but the main body is pretty heavy duty and feels solid. It has a fairly small footprint, so it doesn't take up too much space.

The steam wand - even given it was my first time using a machine, I can say that it is a bit awkwardly placed and hard to use at first. I bring the machine near the edge of your counter so have a little more room to maneuver. But after some practice, I really haven't had any issues with it, and I'm able to get some decent foam. The water resevoir is nicely designed to pull out sideways, so I'm able to pull it out only half way and pour the water in from a pitcher. The drip pan is fairly shallow - but any bigger and I'd probably let coffee sit in there for weeks, so I actually like having to clean it out.

I'm sure there are bigger and badder machines out there. But for the cost, looks, and performance - this machine really fits the bill for our Saturday mornings.

Krups 985-42 Il Caffe Duomo Coffee and Espresso Machine Review

Krups 985-42 Il Caffe Duomo Coffee and Espresso MachineI have had my combo unit for 6 months and have used it constantly since purchase.I am not a true coffee geek. Therefore, my opinion of espresso's and the ability is that of a novice. With this said though I am actively searching for an affordable espresso machine, under $[...].

The good.

1) It was cheap.I picked up mine on clearance for about $[...].
2) The frothier, it works like a champ (once you figure it out)
3) Not too difficult to clean the frothier
4) It is dependable. The first 2 months I owned it; i got on an espresso/cappuccino/latte kick and made about 8 a day for family and friends.I am not kidding, at least 8 a day.
5) If you want to learn how to make espresso and cappuccinos then this will make you learn.

The Bad:

1) The coffee pot is a pain to use.Whenever you pour water into the unit, it spills. Whenever you pour coffee, it spills. It makes a mess no matter what.Maybe I am used to Mr. Coffee and the ability to pour coffee without it catching on the lip. (This is the most annoying thing and the main reason why I am getting rid of it)
2) The espresso side takes a little work to figure out the right amount of water to use to make an espresso to your liking.
3) Mineral build up in the espresso "boiler".If you have hard water, buy distilled water
4) In order to produce enough froth for 2 cups of cappuccino, you need to utilize the "steam" disk and run the espresso machine.Until you get good at this, the milk gets cold before the espresso is done or vice versa.
5) The plastic clip will break off easily.
6) NO AUTOMATIC power off on either the coffee or the espresso side of the device.

Product Description:
Love all manner of coffee drinks? Then consider this combination machine that allows you to brew coffee in the morning, cappuccino in the afternoon, and espresso after dinner (or the other way around depending on your sleep schedule). In this steam espresso maker, water is heated in a sealed boiling chamber and then released through the brew head for espresso or the steam arm for frothing milk. Once the steam has been exhausted, the machine must be allowed to cool prior to opening the sealed boiling chamber and refilling with water. For this reason steam powered machines are best for those who don't want to brew larger amounts of espresso at one time.

DeLonghi Espresso Maker – Stainless Steel (EC460) Review

DeLonghi Espresso Maker – Stainless Steel (EC460)My wife-to-be and I wanted to start making our favorite espresso drinks at home since buying them each morning from Starbucks made us feel guilty (spending $8/day on coffee = $240/month or $2,880/year ). So we started looking into getting an espresso machine and a nice burr grinder for our home. Since I had worked as the manager of a trendy coffee shop/Bar/Restaurant when I was in college, I was already a skilled Barista. As part of that job I also had to read up on coffee types and the various ways to properly prepare it. This really came in handy as we began to research a massive variety of espresso machines. One thing you will quickly find out is you can't be stingy when it comes to spending cash on your machine (but think of the money you can save by making your own). So I was prepared to spend around $350 for our new machine and I seriously considered the starbucks barista model machine (in that price range). But then we came across the De'Longhi EC-460. The machine didn't have very many reviews but it did have good specs, good looks, and the few reviews I could find were very positive. So we gave it a try. Wow are we glad we did. This machine is awesome all around. It's got great looks (looks far better then models which cost 2x as much). It's got the cup warmer on the top, and an easily washable/removable water reservoir. This machine is ideal for making two beverages at a time (if you need any more than that and will need to make them in a second run). What I mean is that frothing/steaming milk for more than two beverages at a given time won't work very well in this machine so you will have to make your drinks in no more than groups of two's. The machine has excellent components (lots of power) and pulls an awesome shot (with perfect crema). And the steam wand heats fast and is extremely effective (great micro-foam). This machine is quality any way you look at it (without taking the price into consideration). Once you take a look at the price-tag for this machine you find that it's down right amazing. If you are looking for an affordable, quality machine (with really great style) to make tasty espresso at home...I would highly recommend you select this machine (EC-460 model).

Emerson Combination Machine Review

Emerson Combination MachineWow! I am a student, so money is not too abundant; however, my wife and I love coffee and dig good espresso, but don't like paying $4+ for a latte. When I saw this combo unit I was skeptical that I could make a good espresso. Machines that friends have are $500+. However, it does a great job.

Pros:

1. Coffee has an automatic brew timer.

2. Good sized water reservoir, especially if you are making a load of espressos.

3. Has a frother. The frothing wand could be longer.

4. The PRICE is the best out there for a good beginner espresso machine. I've had cheaper ones that break easily and do not produce a good espresso WITH crema.

5. Simple operation. You'll read some reviews about the instructions, but come on-it's not rocket science...it's coffee. Water in the water reserve. Check. Grounds in the mesh filter (no more paper-yah!). Check. Push the on button. Check = Coffee. For espresso: Water in reservoir. Push espresso on button. Make sure that you are set for the cup and not steam (pictures). Pump should be off. Put empty portafilter in machine and turn the pump on when green indicator light is on. Run water through for 5 seconds and then turn the pump off. Remove portafilter and put finely ground beans in. Lock portafilter into machine. Turn on the pump. Here is the confusing part: How long do I run the machine for? The manufacturer does not say. I run it until the brown crema gets too light (yeah, subjective-I know). Turn the pump off and turn the machine to steam production. Wait until the green indicator light turns on and then turn the dial ever-so-slowly to flush out water in the line. Then bring your milk to the frothing wand (that you have perfectly placed the rubber tip onto according to my advice below) and turn the steam on ever-so-slowly. When the green light turns off, it's still ok to keep running the steam (if you check, sculding hot steam is still coming from the machine) unless you go way too long. You should be able to steam and foam with this machine in one pass (I started out requiring two warm ups of the steam boiler to get this right, but I guess I really wasn't getting it right-it should take you one pass).

6. Looks attractive.

7. 15 bars of pressure is competitive with very expensive machines.

8. Has a removable drip tray under the espresso machine.

Cons:

1. Only makes 10 cups of coffee.

2. The frothing tip is rubber and sits over a single-walled metal wand. The wand gets very hot, which can burn the milk (so I am told by "experts"-can't tell the difference except for the dried milk that requires a quick and easy rub with a wet rag for clean-up). Nonetheless, the metal part does not have a side spout, which is needed for microfoam production. So, if you want microfoam, you have to place the rubber tip over the wand ever-so-perfectly. Looking inside the rubber tip, there is a groove along the inner cylinder. If the metal tip is just a little higher than this inner cylinder groove exit, then you can actually produce microfoam with this machine and do it quickly-complicated? Sorry. You'll understand when you make a dozen lattes and can't understand what you're doing wrong and then start to experiment.

3.If you get leakage out of the portafilter (the part where ground espresso goes) then you are probably not tamping the grounds down hard enough (requires ~30 lbs of pressure) OR have grounds in the groove. The machine is sensitive in this regard. Also, make sure you do not remove the portafilter until the pressure dissipates (just leave it off for a few minutes) otherwise when you unlock the portafilter grounds are shot into the groove and makes a small mess.

4. There is not a carafe temperature control knob.

5. There are no temperature gauges to tell you what the operating water temperature is (good to know for perfect espresso).

6. Portafilter is fairly small, so making double shot espressos is hard.

Tips:
1. Get coffee flavoring-vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, mocha-whatever you prefer and put 1/2 a shot glass amount into each latte. It really changes everything.
2. Tamp a little ground cinnamon onto the final product for a little extra. It adds flavor and a good smell.

I hope this helps. I do not usually write reviews, but this machine is very impressive for the price, so I wanted to help you out by giving more details.

Follow-up 2/14/10: Unfortunately, the Emerson boiler broke just a few months after purchase. I was still able to produce coffee, but could not make espressos. I contacted the manufacturer and they gave me a return number. I packaged everything up and mailed the entire unit to Emerson's repair department. I didn't have all of the required documentation of purchase, but they did not hassle me. The representative was very polite and effective. She understood the problem and just told me to send it back with a note on the defect. About a week or two later, a brand new Emerson arrived on my doorstep. Haven't had any problems since. Great customer service. The only complaint I could muster if forced to was that I had to eat the shipping cost to Emerson for the unit (~$20); however, they have a $15 charge for all returned products for mailing back to your home. They waived this fee without me even asking about it!

Nescafe Dolce Gusto Single Serve Coffee Machines Review

Nescafe Dolce Gusto Single Serve Coffee MachinesI want to love this machine. If you are considering purchasing the Dolce Gusto machine I STRONGLY suggest you sample the coffee first (I think Sur La Table has demo machines). Here's what I like about the machine:
* The design is sleek.
* It's well made and sturdy.
* The machine heats the water up really fast- once you turn it you're ready to make coffee in well under a minute.
* The machine is incredibly easy to use. (see attached video for a demo of a cappuccino)
* No real cleanup required after each use.

Now for the bad...
* The machine comes with a latte macchiato glass, a cappuccino cup and saucer. Unfortunately the packaging was very poor (not enough bubble wrap) and the saucer arrived cracked.
* The coffee is horrible. As good as the physical machine is... it is only as good as the coffee it makes. All the milk based Dolce Gusto drinks are excessively sweet, taste artificial and have a ton of sugar and have anywhere from 3.5g-6g of fat.
*The non-milk drinks are very disappointing as well. Both the espresso and lungo aren't very strong and taste very average.

I have posted video demonstrations for each of the drinks in my reviews of :
* Cappuccino
* Espresso
* Chococino
* Caffe Lungo
* Latte Macchiato

Hamilton Beach Espresso Maker Review

Hamilton Beach Espresso MakerAn inexpensive way to have coffeehouse-quality beverages at home. Unit is largely plastic, so it may not last forever like the $300+ models, but with proper care should last for years. Frother is easy to use, loud, and effective-just like the sound you hear at every corner coffee bar. Makes one or two cups at a time, and makes them fast and consistently good. Will accept ground espresso, or the individual 1-cup "pods". Comes with an instructional DVD that is 10 minutes well spent. Watched it once, and had my first cinnamon cappucino 10 minutes later! Really produces terrific quality, and makes this an excellent value. One warning: For some reason, this unit requires a manual shut-off to stop the brewing. So, you need to watch the output and hit a button when you think the espresso is as you like it-so no walking away during brewing!

Jura-Capresso 13422 Impressa C9 One Touch Automatic Coffee-and-Espresso Center, Black Review

Jura-Capresso 13422 Impressa C9 One Touch Automatic Coffee-and-Espresso Center, BlackI purchased this recently after I returned my unreliable Saeco V'spresso model. This machine has been much more reliable and makes excellent quality espresso/cappuccino with the push of a button. My favorite feature is the frothing system that allows it possible to make a cappuccino without moving the cup. It is much quicker than the traditional steam wand for lazy people like myself. Jura-Capresso seems to have much better customer service and warranties than its competitors as an added bonus.

Product Description:
With an exceptionally compact design and user-friendly front-panel controls, this automatic coffee-and-espresso center creates cafe-quality coffee drinks without ever having to move the cup. Simply push a preprogrammed beverage button for one or two coffees, one or two espressos, cappuccino, milk, or hot water. The countertop appliance comes equipped with an insulated 14-ounce thermal stainless-steel milk container, which stays right next to the machine and keeps cold milk cold for up to eight hours. The machine will steam and froth the milk; grind, tamp, and high-pressure brew coffee or espresso; then dispense automatically into the cup. Its commercial-grade conical burr grinder offers six fineness settings for any type of bean--from light to dark roasts, while a separate funnel for pre-ground coffee allows for making no-hassle decaf or flavored coffee drinks. The unit features an 18-bar power pump with a 1450-watt stainless-steel-lined ThermoBlock heating system, and its two-step pre-infusion cycle moistens and conditions ground coffee for maximum flavor extraction with perfect crema topping.
For added convenience, the appliance offers easy-to-use programming functions. Choose from two temperature settings, three strength levels, and volume--one or two cups at a time, from 1 to a full 16 ounces. Turn the rotary dial to make changes during brewing without changing the programmed setting. Plus, the steam output can be set to a certain time for filling cup after cup with the exact same amount of hot steamed or frothed milk, which means no more wasted milk. Even more, selecting from "continuous-on" or "auto-off" from one half-hour to nine hours in one-hour increments makes it possible for the unit to turn on at the programmed time and ensures it stays on for as long as it's needed. A bright 10-digit LED display dialog system gives short, simple instructions like "ready", "heating", "fill water", and "clean unit".
Other useful details include a 64-ounce removable water tank, an 8-ounce bean container, a five-level water-hardness selector, an automatic hot-water rinse cycle that cleans and pre-heats all vital brewing parts, a height-adjustable coffee spout, and an electronic water-level sensor that makes sure the machine never operates without water. Moreover, its Clearyl water-care system removes chlorine, lead, aluminum, and copper for better-tasting coffee, and a special organic additive removes almost all calcium and eliminates decalcifying altogether. The unit also provides electronic sensors that indicate when water or coffee beans need to be added, an automatic cleaning cycle indicator, a "full" indicator for the used coffee container, seven language options in the dialog system, Energy Saving mode to reduce power consumption in stand-by mode, and a separate main power switch. Accessories include a Clearyl water filter, cleaning tablets, a measuring scoop, a water-hardness indicator strip, and a DVD with detailed tips on brewing, frothing methods, and cleaning. UL listed for household use, the coffee-and-espresso center measures 16 by 11 by 13-1/2 inches and carries a limited warranty for two years or 6,000 cups, whichever comes first.

West Bend 55109 3-in-1 Coffee Center Review

West Bend 55109 3-in-1 Coffee CenterIt takes forever to brew regular coffee, and its 99% plastic. Add onto that the spring loaded thing to stop drips while pouring mid brew doesnt work. But the espresso part works great, super fast (unlike the 2+ min it said it needed in the manual). I paid $19 at Christmas Tree shop, so in all honesty, thats why it got 4 stars. Jura-Capresso 13332 Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, Matte Black Review

Jura-Capresso 13332 Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, Matte BlackWhere to begin? This machine can do it all, from a strong shot of espresso to a flawless cappuccino, all in under minute. If you can tie your shoes, you can use one of these machines.

I looked in to this machine after using an older Capresso model at a friend's house. I was always impressed by how easily and quickly he could make a variety of drinks for guests, not to mention the quality of their appearance and flavor.

This machine comes with two different frothing systems, one is a more traditional bullet style frother, while the other can automatically steam or froth milk. This is where the J5 really shines. In no time you can froth yourself milk that would make the most seasoned barista jealous, and then push a single button to instantly brew piping hot coffee.

The machine starts with whole beans of your choosing and grinds them just for the drink you are making. This ensures that you'll get the freshest tasting coffee cup after cup.

What I like most about this machine though is the variety of drinks it can make. If you have a guest over who isn't a big coffee drinker you can use the machine to make instant hot water for tea, or my favorite trick: run chocolate milk through the steamer for instant hot chocolate. Of course for the rest of us, the pressure brewing system in this machine will allow you to say goodbye to expensive coffee drinks, and become your own favorite barista.

Product Description:
Equipped with an 18-bar pump and 1450-watt stainless-steel-lined thermoblock heating system, this automatic coffee and espresso center can produce cup after cup of coffee with no down time in between. The machine's unique two-step pre-infusion cycle ensures every brew delivers optimal flavor extraction and a creamy crema layer. In the first stage, freshly ground coffee gets compressed, then injected with a small burst of hot water, causing the moist grounds to expand. In the second stage, brewing water courses through the engorged coffee grounds.
This user-friendly appliance combines not only powerful performance, but also a simple, elegant design with easy-to-use controls. Its front panel offers six buttons in the shape of a ring: two buttons for espresso (single and double), two for coffee (single and double), one for hot water, and one for steam. All of these functions are individually programmable. For example, the strength, temperature, and size of each of the coffee buttons can be set, as can the amount of water delivered in a hot water cycle, and the amount of time a steam cycle lasts. The 10-digit alpha-numeric LCD display clearly communicates all functions and settings in any one of five languages. The top of the unit provides three more controls: two buttons (one for power, the other for maintenance) and an illuminated rotary control dial for overriding any settings for coffee and steam. Choose from 11 programming options by pushing the integrated rotary button.
The coffee and espresso center also showcases several other innovative features. Its new ceramic-valve technology shortens the flow of coffee, resulting in a hotter temperature and more crema in the cup. The machine's three hot-water temperature settings produce a hotter Cafe Americano, pre-warm coffee cups faster, and accommodate a larger variety of tea preparation. It also provides a dual, butterfly, coffee-spout design that moves up/down and in/out to accommodate a larger range of cups.
Other highlights include a commercial-grade, solid-steel conical burr grinder with six fineness settings and low-noise operation; a 9-ounce bean container with aroma cover and low-level bean indicator; a self-adjusting brewing chamber, which holds from 5 to 16 grams of ground coffee to make up to two 8-ounce cups of coffee at a time; a sensor-activated pre-ground coffee funnel; a clock/timer with programmable auto-on and auto-off capabilities; and a 71-ounce removable water container with a Clearyl water-filtration system and low-water indicator. Even more, the machine provides two interchangeable frother systems, which include a Dual Frother Plus for manual operation and a frothXpress for automatic frothing and steaming. La Pavoni Stradavari Espresso Machines Review

La Pavoni Stradavari Espresso MachinesThis machine is outstanding! That is, if you know how to manually pull shots. Apparently, some people want a fully automated espresso machine so do not get this if that is what your looking for. Once you get the hang of how it works, you will never want coffee from any store like charbucks or tully's...I lived in Italy for almost 2 years and this machine will produce better espresso than what I had over there, which was better than anything from a coffee shop in the US. If you get this machine get a conical burr grinder, and if you are serious about coffee, roast your own beans too. I have a Zassenhaus knee grinder, a Nesco professional coffee roaster, and I buy my green coffee beans from [...]. Buying this machine with regular roasted beans from the store is not going to produce the best espresso and you should look at a cheaper machine if you are planning on doing so. Overall the machine looks beautiful on your counter and you will impress your friends with your at-home barista skills!

Cuisinox Liberta 6 cup Espresso Coffeemaker Review

Cuisinox Liberta 6 cup Espresso CoffeemakerIt's easy to get a cup of coffee anywhere, but it's not easy to get a really good cup of coffee. I have done a lot of research before I bought this item and I am very glad I got it. It was not mentioned in the item description so I'll note it here that this espresso maker is not made in Italy or India like a lot of others sold on Amazon. This one is made in China.

I have to say it's very beautifully made. It looks like what shown in the picture. It's very solid and seems that it will last for a long time.

I also wanted to share that I experimented with it a little and learned that the espresso tastes a lot better if I mix in the milk or cream with the water in the bottom base and let the entire liquid mix steam through the coffee ground.

Another note is that no matter how low the level of heat you use to brew is, the entire thing gets pretty hot. If it were having a plastic handle it would have been burned away on my first use. I kind of expected this and am glad the whole thing is made of steel.

I really love this espresso maker and would highly recommend it to anyone who really wants to make a good cup of coffee.

Espressione Café Retro Espresso Machines Review

Espressione Café Retro Espresso MachinesI almost didn't buy this machine because I was worried about some of the negative reveiws I've read about it from users. However, it was the only machine its price range that really caught our eye, so we went ahead and purchased it and have been using it for about six months. It is hands down the best machine I've ever owned. It has great features, and the espresso is the best espresso I've made at home, and better than most espresso I can buy in american coffee shops.A quick rundown of the great features.

1.It looks great. It heats up quickly, and it is very simple to use.

2.The size of the water resevoir is pretty generous. It holds enough water for about 24 shots. You can expect to get a little less if you are steaming a lot of milk, but if you are steaming at the recommended temperature, the machine is very water efficient, and you shouldn't see a dramatic drop.We use it every day to make at least two drinks (at leeast 4 shots), a lot more on the weekends, and we refill only about once a week, roughly. The design also makes it quite easy to refill, I've been in the middle of steaming or pulling a shot when I realized the reservoir was low, and refilled whiled pulling the shot. This is awfully convenient.

3.The machine comes with a disc you can put inside the porta filter to make a sort of fake crema by whipping the coffee, which is popular on upper-end machines these days. However, if you are using good coffee, and grind your beans fresh, and brew the coffee at the recommended temperature, the machine produces a wonderful genuine crema without the disc. I never get an espresso in a coffee house with a crema as good. (crema has more to do with the the quality of the coffee than the machine, but cheaper machines that pull the coffee way too hot never produce good cremas because of the crazy temperatures.)

4.The steam wand does a great job of genlty steaming and frothing without scalding the daylights out of your milk.I've heard a lot of complaints about the steamer, but in my experience it works perfectly, and easily.

5.It does come with an adaption for pods, if you're into pods (blech.)

6,I love that the machine has a temperature gague that allows you to control the temperature of your steam and coffee, and not just indicator lights. It allows you to have a lot more control over the quality of your espresso.

A few things that are so so, the included tamp is flimsy and useless, get yourself a nice heavy one.The drip tray does feel a little light and cheap compared to the rest of the machine, but it is perfectly functional. The Cup warmer isn't very successful at warming cups. But these are minor quibbles I have with it.

I'm sure if I were willing to pay 4 or 5 times as much, I'd get a better espresso, but for the price, I couldn't be happier with this machine. It beats any of the little starter machines you get, and makes better espresso than machines that cost twice the price, in my experience.I'm very happy with this machine.

Urnex Cleancaf Coffee Machine Cleaner and Descaler - 14-CL12-3-13 Review

Urnex Cleancaf Coffee Machine Cleaner and Descaler - 14-CL12-3-13Just my TWO CENTS:

Expensive to use? Bitter taste after usage? Not Recommended by OEM's? Use lemon juice? Maybe it's just me, but I really don't get it!

Unless you're using your machine commercially to make hundreds of shots per week, you're wasting your money, not to mention killing your machine by decalcifying constantly. I have nearly 6,000 shots (!) on my one year-old Saeco Incanto Sirius machine and I just finished my FIRST 3-package Cleancaf box. In all this time, the machine has only prompted me to decalcify ONCE. It bases this on a water pH test you perform at the time of new machine commissioning and the coresponding water hardness setting of the machine resulting from the set-up test. I ignore the prompt and just decalc every THREE months or so (i.e, like the package instructions recommend, LOL!) I've never noticed a decrease in water flow (during coffee or steam/hot water wand usage), nor has there been any decrease in coffee temperature. FWIW, I fill the machine reservoir (I have spare reservoir that I use for decalcifying only) all the way up with warm water and one packet of Cleancaf...it has a two-litre capacity. Then I rinse with TWO reservoirs full of clean warm water. It DOES take a while....the machine is next to the sink, so I aim the wand at the drain, let the thing go and walk away to do other things. I NEVER have an issue with taste after cleaning and I am anal about coffee taste, freshness and machine cleanliness. FWIW, the machine uses the Aqua Prima in-reservoir micropore and charcoal filter, and I use supermarket-brand spring water (loaded with mineral and micro-organisms, LOL) in the one-gallon jug (lots of them, with the amt. of espresso I brew, LOL!).

For those of you thinking of using a non-authorized acidic solution (lemon juice, vinegar, etc.) for decalcifying, think again. SAECO USA as well as Whole Latte Love (authorized SAECO sales/service) will tell you to use SAECO Dezcal (it's also made by Urnex)or Urnex Cleancaf ONLY for decalcification. They're non-toxic, bio-degradeable, chelation-process cleaners (Dezcal is weak sulfonic acid, Cleancaf is classified "non-hazardous" per their respective MSDS hazardoussheets). If you use lemon juice or white vinegar you will very likely cause water circuit damage and VOID your warrantee. Don't believe me, call the manufacturer and ask yourself...it's in the owner's manual as well. BTW, most Starbucks Barrista espresso machines are OEM'ed by SAECO in Bologna, Italia.

My machine has been in to the local factory authorized repair center (broken grinder...fixed FOC under the OEM warrantee), and they remarked on how spotless the machine was, inside, outside, in the brew circuit and in the hot water circuit...especially considering the amount of shots I make!

SAECO, WLL and the local warrantee station (The Repair Shack) also recommend Urnex Cafiza (I use the Tablets, you can also buy it in powder form) to keep the COFFEE circuit as spotless as the HOT WATER circuit. You can see it work as it "peels" the layers of stuck-on coffee residue that even constant rinsing on my part (remember, I am anal, LOL!) does not remove and flushes it out. That, my friends, DEFINITELY results in me being able to fully appreciate my Lavazza Super Crema-based espresso, caffe lungo (caffe crema) and capuccino with NO bitterness caused by a dirty machine! If you're going to spend the money on an expensive machine, and use expensive coffee, you might as well get great tasting caffe, right?

My vote: HIGHLY Recommended. Just use it sparingly and enjoy your coffee!

Gaggia 90901 Platinum Swing Up Automatic Espresso Machine with Milk Island, Platinum Review

Gaggia 90901 Platinum Swing Up Automatic Espresso Machine with Milk Island, PlatinumWell we tried the Gaggia Titanium and we did not like it at all (too loud, too big, odd settings).. This one, the gaggia Swing up is PERFECT! We can do Ristretto (tiny concentrated espresso). Noise level is very good. and the machine is too big at all! The only small minus is that the water tank coud have been a bit bigger but it would mean a bulkier machine (can't have it all). Access to the tank and the coffee dumps is very easy (much easier than the titanium model). I highly recommend it! oh I almost forgot the milk island attachment is SO good too! THe milk is froth to perfection, easy to do a creamy hot chocolate with it in less than a minute!

Product Description:
Brew cafe-quality espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and more from the comfort of home with this automatic espresso machine. Its intuitive programming menu includes a digital LCD screen and touch ring controls that make it easy to select the aroma strength, temperature, menu language, clock and timer settings, and much more. The unit's built-in ceramic burr grinder ensures the freshest results, while its 8-4/5-ounce bean hopper offers adjustable ground-coffee dosage from 7 to 10-1/2 grams. Select mild to strong beverages while maintaining a perfect crema thanks to the Espresso Plus System. The appliance also comes equipped with 15-bar pump pressure and a stainless-steel-lined boiler with a rapid-steam boiler system, which means no waiting between frothing milk and brewing espresso. The included Pannarello steam wand takes the guesswork out of frothing milk for thick cappuccinos and lattes, plus provides hot water for tea, hot cocoa, or soup. A Milk Island accessory unit also comes included. Simply attach it to the machine, fill it with milk, and it will automatically steam and froth milk in seconds.
Furthermore, the espresso machine can prepare two cups at the same time, while its stainless-steel, actively heated cup warmer helps maintain the integrity of freshly brewed espresso--pouring hot coffee into a cold cup can cool it down too quickly. Other highlights include a bypass doser for preground coffee, a 57-ounce removable water reservoir, an Aqua Prima water filter, an automatic height-adjustable drip tray, and a coffee-grounds container. The brewing unit removes for easy maintenance, and the machine's impact-resistant ABS plastic housing with a stainless-steel-finished front panel will look great on any kitchen counter. Designed by Gaggia, one of the most respected names in the industry, the 1500-watt espresso machine measures 12-3/5 by 16-1/3 by 14-4/7 inches.
