Gaggia 16100 Evolution Home Espresso Cappuccino Machine, Black Review

Gaggia 16100 Evolution Home Espresso Cappuccino Machine, BlackAfter many happy (and dare I say, naive) years with our DeLonghi Caffe Espresso, it was time to replace our old workhorse.Having just spent the summer in Spain, where no bar is complete without the standard superautomatic Gaggia espresso maker, I decided that truly great espresso was a daily necessity.I was tired of incompetent teenagers / college students who work at local coffee shops mangling something as simple as a cappuccino (one part espresso, one part milk, one part foam) into a milk-drowned latte with no foam.

I wanted something in the range of $200, with a dependable track record and plenty of power to spare.I waded through a myriad of reviews for the Gaggia Carezza, hailed as a champion of its class, but read a number of negative reviews concerning design shortcomings.

Enter the Gaggia Evolution.Although the Gaggia Carezza and Evolution share the same innards, the Evolution boasts several improvements in design. With its 17.5 bar pump and high wattage, dual element boiler, the Gaggia Evolution is ready to brew in around 5-10 minutes (I always prime the boiler first).

Design improvements over the Carezza include: a larger drip tray, a cup warmer (although, as usual, it's more effective to preheat your cups by filling them with hot water, which can be done during priming), anti-vibration mounts (once primed, the Gaggia Evolution is nearly whisper-quiet), and a brass commercial portafilter (the spouts on the Carezza were changed to plastic). My Evolution came with the Perfect Crema device (which is supposed to go under the single filter basket in order to create additional pressure/allow a coarser grind), but having read numerous negative reviews of the ineffective device, I simply left it in the box with the packing material.

Five stars for the instruction manuals and CD-ROM: the Gaggia Evolution comes with not one, but two instruction manuals: one from the manufacturer (Gaggia), and one from the North American importer (Importika). The Importika manual is intuitive, easy to read and injected with coffee humor, although the Evolution is not among the Gaggia models listed in the Appendix. The included CD-ROM walks you through setup in the form of short movies and narration, along with more advanced tips and techniques for coffee connoisseurs. We put our laptop on the kitchen table and followed along after unpacking our new Gaggia (thankfully, nothing was broken in the mail, as happened to several Gaggia Carezza owners).Although the manual hinted that your first coffee might not be potable, we'd followed various tips online (prime your new machine several times to remove any residue and plastic-y taste), and our first espresso was laden with crema. The Turbo Frother attachment made the creamiest, densest microfoam I have ever seen-it looked more like meringue (hint: use skim milk for best results). My only complaint would be the cheapness of the included coffee scoop, and you definitely want to invest in a better tamp for maximum extraction (the Gaggia takes a 58 mm tamp at a recommended 30 pounds of pressure).

If you're not in the market to buy a $200-300 grinder (Rancilio Rocky or Gaggia 8002 MDF Burr Grinder) to go with your new Gaggia, Illy makes a delicious, dependable espresso grind, available in tins (decaf, too) or Pods. The Evolution is Pod-ready, simply use the single shot basket with the portafilter. Tip: "classic" double shots should take around 20-25 seconds to extract.

The Evolution is a steal for the current price, since it contains the same innards as other Gaggias in the $400-500 range.Although it runs around $50-100 more than the Carezza, I appreciated the design improvements, stylish lines (I have a Tuscan kitchen with hand-painted ceramics and terra cotta tiles and was afraid that the "modern" styling would stand out, but the Evolution is much more traditional-looking and unobtrusive than the Carezza), and performance.(Note: the Evolution is also available in an all-silver model, but it will set you back another $50.The black model features a black base and sides and a silver front and silver drip tray.)

Excellent for the espresso novice or connoisseur, easy to use and clean, and it makes better espresso than some $500-1,000 machines I've tried!

Briel ES62AF L'Expresso Automatic Cadiz Espresso Machine Review

Briel ES62AF L'Expresso Automatic Cadiz Espresso MachineThe machine worked great for about 3 months, then it started leaking, we looked inside and a rubber gasket had melted and a silicone stopper had turned to dust. Ok so things happen. After reading the horror stories here about the service center in NJ I called the one in Canada. A very nice man that spoke French and a little broken English tried to help but said he could not honor the warranty because it was purchased in the US. So then the nightmare began. I tried calling the US center 4 days running and kept getting a busy signal.
I had overtime misplaced the 800 number so I used MSN's yellow pages and dialed long distance. I then spent 10 minutes argueing with 2 people that I indeed did not dial the 800 number and would they please give me that number. After being called a liar about that I was told it would cost approximately $60 in handling fees, and if they determined that the damage was my fault I would be paying for the parts and labor as well.
I dont really give a damn how nice the coffe is folks, if that machine breaks down and you live in the US, consider yourself owning a $200 door stop, or a $400 machine after repair. Personally, if Im going to spend $400 its going to be on a different machine and it certainly wont be made by Briel

Krups XP5240 Pump Espresso Machine with Precise Tamp System Review

Krups XP5240 Pump Espresso Machine with Precise Tamp SystemWe tried a Breville before this Krups machine. We were looking to replace a 20 year old Krups steam driven machine which we also loved. This machine is worth the extra $100 we paid over what we would have spent for the Breville. We purchased from a local store. We paid more but liked the convenience of returning the unit if we did not like it.This Krups machine has some really nice features. It has this "auto tamping" feature that is really nice. The espresso holder is only one unit and you add more or less espresso depending on whether you want a single shot or a double. It has a ratchet system that tamps the grind down and an indicator on the unit determines whether you are compressing for a double or single shot.If you want a single shot you add less and tighten further to the right to match up with the indicator. It is very easy to get used to and eliminates the need for an extra "reducer" part to deal with single shots. The "creama" is there but not exactly thick and not something we care that much about. The unit is easy to clean. The only negative is they supply a rather gimicky measuring scoop and if you use the amount they recommend it comes out too weak and not consistent with the indicator marks on the unit.So we just add more espresso and use a spoon rather than the scoop. We also purchased a nice frothing container from William Sonoma for $15. to replace the container supplied with our old Krups machine. We like this frothing pitcher much better as it has ample supply so the froth does not keep overflowing. This also allows us to get the milk to a much higher temperature. We warm up the mugs in the microwave before we brew and this helps us get a piping hot latte.I have to admit this pump driven machine has some really nice features and the taste is better than the old Krups we had grown to love (no ashy taste whatsoever)... My husband and I both look forward to waking up and having our lattes from this machine every morning. Now if only this one would last another 20 years!Look for my follow-up reviews. One more thing. We also decided to use whole milk for our lattes since the amount of milk we add to get the taste we love is not very much. The extra enjoyment with whole milk is worth it to us!

Espresso Supply 58-Milimeter Backflush Insert, Metal Review

Espresso Supply 58-Milimeter Backflush Insert, MetalAs the item description states, this blind basket will fit into a 58-mm (commercial size) portafilter. In my case, it fit perfectly in a Gaggia New Baby 2006 portafilter.I attempted to backflush my machine and did worked! In my case backflushing does not appear to be necessary because only clear liquid came out and there didn't appear to be any build-up behind the shower screen (though there are many who will argue otherwise). At $4 I believe the cost is really reasonable even if I never use it on the Gaggia again, I can still probably use it on any other 58-mm portafilter machine.

Note: Remember that you can only backflush a machine with a 3-way valve. If you are unsure of whether your machine has one or not I would strongly recommend finding out before buying this and possibly damaging your machine!

Maintaining an espresso machine can not only extend the life of the machine but also provide more consistent and flavorful espresso. One of the most common ways of cleaning the screen and group head is to backflush the machine with a small amount of cleaner. In order to perform this cleaning you will need a blind filter or backflush insert for the portafilter. Espresso Supply offers the Metal Backflush Insert (02070-STD) which fits all 58 millimeter portafilters for cleaning. Backflush cleaning is recommended for commercial espresso machines with a three-way valve.

Bennoti N-1001 Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Review

Bennoti N-1001 Espresso and Cappuccino MakerThe Bennoti is a very nice, easy-to-use espresso capsule machine. It's quick and offers nice crema. Prime each new cup for about five seconds to warm the outer hardware. (Leave your old capsule in for the prime.) Also warm your cup with water to boiling in the microwave. Use heat-retaining cups to keep the espresso warmer longer. Double up each cup by inserting a new cap half-way through for ultra-rich espresso with very nice crema for a machine of this price. Doubling up also helps the quality because the Bennoti caps themselves aren't the best. (Hence the four-stars.) The customer service is laughable, and they're still sending me dual orders of the wrong coffee. Oh well, I'll just keep drinking it.

DeLonghi EN670.B Nespresso Lattissima Single-Serve Espresso Maker, Black Review

DeLonghi EN670.B Nespresso Lattissima Single-Serve Espresso Maker, BlackWe just got this machine over the holidays and have been more than impressed. In fact, we're down-right addicted to it.It truly is very easy to use and makes great espressos, lattes and cappuccinos (kudos to Nespresso for excellent pod quality). Has completely replaced Starbucks for us, which has resulted in big savings and convenience. Also perfect for dinner parties, where we can make drink after drink after drink with practically no effort.

The only issues I've found is that it does drip a little after making drinks, which leads to some clean-up, but pretty minor. And, those pod costs do add up, but that's the case with any machine and still a fraction of what you would pay at Starbucks.

Others have complained about the temperature of the drinks, and it is a little cooler than I would like for the first drink. However, I found that running the "clean" mode on the milk container before making the drinks helps heat up the tubes and makes for hotter initial drink. Also, quickly preheating the cup with hot water helps. All this takes about 12 seconds.Once you're past the first, it's fine.

One hint on the milk, we've found that using 2% "pasteurized" instead of "ultra-pasteurized" gives a better, thicker foam.

Only reason why four stars instead of five is the initial machine cost and ongoing pod cost.

Senseo HD7001 Espresso Pod Holder for Gourmet Coffee Machines Review

Senseo HD7001 Espresso Pod Holder for Gourmet Coffee MachinesI decided to try the Senseo Espresso Pod holder and have really enjoyed the espresso it produces. I think for the $8.99 to buy the holder you can have a real decent shot of espresso and it is quick and painless to prepare. Try it and you may never waste time with your old machine. Two important hints. One is from the manual insert that comes with the pod. Run a water only cup through first to heat the cup and also to make sure the water is really hot in the machine. 2 The other hint I found on another site about the pods. Run a little water over the pod on both sides before you brew the cup. This seems to make a bolder, stronger espresso that really tastes great.

DeLonghi EN680.M Nespresso Lattissima Single-Serve Espresso Maker, Metal Review

DeLonghi EN680.M Nespresso Lattissima Single-Serve Espresso Maker, MetalI loved this machine from the first time I saw and tried it.However, I started having problems on day 2 - the milk wouldn't froth and it came out in spurts with a lot of water, not even filling 1/8 of the glass with milk.I took it back to Williams Sonoma and they cheerfully replaced it.It happened again to this new machine and, once again, I took it back for a replacement.(I had been in touch with Nespresso at all the junctures along the way and they replaced the milk jug and top twice.)When it happened on the third machine, I called the local Williams-Sonoma and asked if there was someone who could check out my machine.I am in the Danbury, CT area and Bill, at the local Williams-Sonoma, told me to leave it with him while I shopped and he would check it out. When I returned he told me it was frothing perfectly and then showed me how he set it up.It seems that I had not been pushing the jug connection tight enough. It has to click in.The lights had always been on and so I believed that the jug was connected correctly, but I was wrong. Not until I saw it being done and felt the connection, did I understand what I was doing wrong.Without being tightly connected it doesn't work correctly. Now I push until I hear a click and/or push it in a second time holding the back of the machine as I push, and have been making perfect lattes.I recommend this machine highly but think the documentation should be rewritten with this little bit of information in bold letters. I have seen many reviews of this machine from people who have had the same problem and hope that they found the solution as this machine is wonderful.

Used capsules eject automatically into the used-capsule collection container after the brewing cycle has completed.
In addition, illuminated controls allow for easily choosing from cappuccino, latte macchiato, espresso coffee, long coffee, or hot water. The unit's patented IFD milk system includes a milk container for cappuccinos and lattes, and the amounts of frothed/steamed milk and coffee can be adjusted to suit individual preferences. La Pavoni Professional PBB-16 Espresso Machine Black Base Review

La Pavoni Professional PBB-16 Espresso Machine Black BaseThis is my fourth espresso machine. I bought it after the La Pavoni "Carina" (that I bought from Zabars) started to get unreliable, and I decided I'd rather replace it than to put more money into the Carina ... and still face a week or two of drip coffee.

While it is amusing how very little different the Professional and the 'Toy' models look, there is a big difference in performance. The Carina takes a very long time to heat up; this Carina Grande (which is what La Pavoni calls this black-base Professional model) takes five minutes. The Carina generates more steam pressure than a cheap automatic espresso machine, but the Carina Grande generates more steam pressure than the Carina. The result is that I get a better cup of espresso, with less need to plan ahead.

The machine is a little quirky. When you turn it on, it vents a bit of steam from the over-pressure valve before it makes a thtip sound and the pressure starts mounting. It's not very consistent about how long it will vent. If the water level is much below half-full, it may keep venting and not start building pressure.

I think the bottom line with La Pavoni is you get a really gorgeous Chrome Peacock that makes truly great espresso, but the workmanship is a bit uneven and you certainly shouldn't expect Japanese-car levels of reliability.

Nespresso D290 Concept Automatic Coffee-and-Espresso Machine with Aeroccino Milk Frother, Satin Chrome Review

Nespresso D290 Concept Automatic Coffee-and-Espresso Machine with Aeroccino Milk Frother, Satin ChromeAt one time I owned a Krups espresso/cappuccino machine that I ended up using for only a few months since it was such a pain to set up and clean. Right now, it's sitting in my basement, gathering cobwebs. However, when I received this Nespresso machine as a gift, I now can have cappuccino whenever I want in mere minutes. I turn the machine on, wait for the solid red light to show proper heat/steam (it takes about 30 seconds), pop in a pod, and press the correct cup size for espresso or the larger "lungo." The coffee is forced through the pod and into the cup below in seconds, with a nice brown crema on top. For cappuccino or latte, you need only to then press the steam button (the machine comes with a steamer attachment), stick the tube in a cup of milk, press the lever, and watch the machine suck up the milk and deposit it, hot and foamy, into the cup. Clean up? A breeze. Even if you steam milk, you have only let the steamer suck in water for a few seconds and deposit it into another cup. The empty pods are tossed into an internal receptacle that holds ten or so. There is no tamping for preparation. No scraping the grounds out afterward. No dishwashing. It really is that simple. And the espresso and cappuccino taste just like they do in Italy.

Of course, there are downsides to every machine, and this one is expense. Not only is the machine pricey, but the pods must be purchased through Nespresso at approximately fifty cents per pod. (They come in sleeves of ten.) The Nespresso also must be particularly sensitive to power surges, since mine stopped working in less than a year, as did my sister's, for no apparent reason. But . . . the customer service is awesome. I called, and they sent a loaner machine overnight, with packing and a pre-paid label to send mine in for servicing. When mine was fixed a week later, I simply shipped the loaner machine back using, again, a pre-paid label. I didn't pay a cent. Still, I now leave my machine unplugged when not in use. Others may want to put it on a surge protector.

I was worried that the pre-measured portions of coffee would taste canned, but they have excellent flavor. Once you buy this machine, you will be part of the "Nespresso Club" (wait until you see how exclusive they make it seem -- you'll have to laugh!). You will buy your coffee off the web site or over the phone, and receive it within two days. The "Ristretto" pods make the best full-strength espresso and cappuccino. Even when I make "lungo" coffee, I tend to use the higher strength coffees such as "Arpeggio" since I'm not a fan of the milder types. "Decaffeinato Intenso" makes competent decaf cappuccino as well as lungo, although I wish they had an even stronger decaf. (The regular "Decaffeinato" is milder.)

This machine is a luxury, to be sure, and I doubt I would have splurged on my own. However, this is one gift that I use regularly, with as much appreciation for it as I had the first week. Unlike my Krups machine, this one sits proudly on my counter. Friends who come to dinner eye it longingly, hoping that, once again, I'll offer up espresso or cappuccino with dessert. Of course, I always oblige.

If you are more interested in "lungo" (regular) coffee, then I suggest you look at the new single-cup coffee makers such as Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System.

Nespresso CitiZ Automatic Espresso Maker Review

Nespresso CitiZ Automatic Espresso MakerI have experienced a holiday 2009 embarrassment of riches.I purchased a DeLonghi EC155 espresso machine as a gift for my wife after much research and we have used it for for 2 days with much pleasure. As a total surprise, we received a Nespresso D110 as a family gift during a party, and we could not refuse it.It will be interesting to compare the $83 DeLonghi (with another $20 rebate in the mail) to, if I have the price right on Amazon, a $279.00 Nespresso D110.

First of all, the Nespresso D110 is really beautiful--as much a work of art as a functional machine. The "winter white" is more of a cream color and the machine itself reminds me of an art deco juke box from the 1950s, if that makes any sense. It is very slim and looks beautiful on the counter top.The DeLonghi is much more utilitarian, with obviously less expensive materials (again, the price difference makes sense). If I use a PC analogy, the D110 is a Mac (elegant, incredibly simple to use, and expensive).Just as there are vocal supporters of MacWorld--I think the Nespresso D110 will have equally vocal supporters if you can justify the price...or better yet, receive as a gift :)!

Initial impressions:it took about an hour and several tries on the DeLonghi EC155 to get the proportions right for a nice espresso with the ESE pods. With the Nespresso D110, it literally took about 5 minutes--and 3 minutes of that was reading the directions.1-button operation. The crema on the espressos we produced from the Nespresso capsules were better the first time than we have been able to produce from the DeLonghi after several iterations.

My biggest complaint:the Nespresso machine does not have a milk frother whereas the DeLonghi EC155 does.Though I am not a designer, because the design is pump driven--it seems like having a frother would have been relatively easy and could have been incorporated with the elegant D110 design without altering its sleek appearance. Finally, a quick Amazon search tells me that the capsules that are to be used with the Nespresso line are proprietary, so there is not the competition like there is with the ESE pods used by other machines.A quick perusal tells me that the capsules are over $0.60 each, in bulk, while ESE pods can be found for closer to $0.40 online. The lack of frother and the proprietary capsules needed have me taking away 1-star.

Finally, this espresso machine is beautiful, elegant, very quick (you can crank out multiple espressos for a gathering quickly), produces excellent crema, has a small footprint, and is extremely easy to use.You pay a price for all of this and will continue to do so with the proprietary capsules.Again, the PC vs. Mac analogy is a good one.

DeLonghi ESAM5500M Perfecta Digital Super-Automatic Espresso Machine, Metallic BlueI am surprised that I am the first reviewer of this great machine.I just received mine yesterday.I bought it from another vender, but since I typically do most of my shopping via Amazon I thought I would share my experience thus far.Overall, this Super-Automatic is simple to use and makes great coffee, lattes, and cappuccino's.My advice though....WATCH THE DVD BEFORE USING!!!I thought I had this thing in the bag.. how difficult could it be to use??....Well it isn't difficult to use, but there are a few things I did that had I watched the video all the way through I would not have done. For example, when setting how fine or coarse you want the beans you have to adjust the dial one notch at a time while the grinder is running (still doesn't make sense to me).I paused the video before waiting for the lady to finish talking on the topic and just moved it a few notches towards fine...oops!Oh well, doesn't seem to have adversely effected anything, but now I know.Contrary to reviews I have read of super-auto's, the burr grinder on this one is quiet when running. On a scale of 1-10 where 10 is extremely loud and 1 is basically silent I would rate this machine a 5 and my Cuisinart Grind and brew (the one that hold like a pound of beans) an 8.I was actually expecting something much louder.

Build Quality-I would have to say I am impressed with the looks of this machine and its fit and finish.I am sure some people will complain of the amount of plastic, but seeing how this thing already weighs over 20lbs.why add more weight.I thought about the Gran Dama, but honestly this machine is better.

Coffee- I was also considering the Jura Z5 because I read good things, but the price was a stretch.Granted, this machine isn't cheap either.I believe that I made the right choice. The espresso is great.I do wonder though what it tasted like from the factory, but since I changed the settings prematurely I will never know...ha!The Milk pitcher is ingenious...BRAVO!Latte's and Cappuccino's are a breeze and let me tell you this machine makes both very well.Sure a semi-auto can do better, but really I do not want to do the extra steps. As it is, Starbucks does not compare.I have read reviews that state the Gran Dama latte's can be cold.I have to admit, the first one I made was, but after I made a couple and utilized the cup warmer they were perfect.I bought the Cinnamon Dolce syrup from Starbucks and I downed to many lattes....probably explains why at 0209 EST I am still up and writing this review.

My Opinion-If you are in the market for a super-automatic I would say give this one a consideration.I bought this machine from a place that has probably the best return policy of all retailers, so if something does go wrong I will take it right back for another.Regardless, the people at Delonghi are great and I was amazed that as soon as I pushed (1) I was talking to a person almost immediately.I will probably just purchase the extended warranty from the manufacturer and extend the 2 years to 4...Extra $150.That is all for now.Look for an update in a couple months.**UPDATE** 3/24/10

Well I overworked the first one, but the place I bought it from gladly took it back and ordered me another one.I made nearly 2,000 cups of coffee in 4 months with the first one.I have made nearly 1000 with the one I have now, but it seems to be holding up fine.As far as recommending it I still would.I love this machine. It is so nice that I can make everything Starbucks does without having to pay them $4 for every cup.I have basically every syrup they have and all my guests rave about the Delonghi. It is a lot of money to spend on a coffee maker, but I would do it again.

Cuisinox Espresso Stovetop Coffeemaker Review

Cuisinox Espresso Stovetop CoffeemakerThis purchase was pennywise and pound-foolish.The metal in this is not like other stovetop espresso makers. It gives off an odd aroma. It arrives with a filmy residue that mostly washes off with dishsoap. But after use, it develops gelatinous goop inside the water reservoir. All this plus being made in China is giving me a really bad vibe. The coffee is reasonably tasty, but I'm chucking the thing.I never do that, but I just can't shake the idea that I am getting something more than coffee in my daily cup.I'm going to pay a few extra bucks for some peace of mind with my cup of joe.

Product Description:
With the invention of the stovetop espresso coffee maker, espresso - long a staple of Italian cafes and bars - became available for home consumption. As the cold water in the lower chamber heats, the pressure from its boiling forces the water up through the coffee grounds. In just a few minutes, espresso emerges from the spout into the upper chamber as the pot hisses and gurgles. Remove the pot from the heat and let it stand until the lower chamber is releasing only steam.

Durgol 0296 Express Multipurpose Decalcifier Review

Durgol 0296 Express Multipurpose DecalcifierI'm reluctant to admit I had neglected the regular maintenance of my Carezza espresso machine for a year or two. While waiting for the Durgol Decalcifier to arrive in the mail, I flushed the machine with vinegar and cleaned the parts as described to get the cleaning process started. The machine still didn't work right. This Durgol product arrived today and I again flushed the machine according to directions, using this decaldifier.I'm amazed at the amount of sludge and disgusting grime that came out! This product is wonderful and has restored my espresso maker.

Saeco S-OG-SG Odea Giro Super-Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Saeco S-OG-SG Odea Giro Super-Automatic Espresso MachineThis is a great machine for the price! At first I was nervous because of the plastic feel, but it seems to be holding up really well.It is very quick to heat up.VERY quiet considering the ceramic grinder. It is given 4 stars because of how quickly the drip tray fills up (near the coffee grounds drawer) otherwise I would give this a 5 star rating. It has to be emptied once a day if you have used the machine a lot.We do because it has the awesome feature of sending out hot water with the spout just by pushing the water button and turing the knob on top.So we use this machine for hot tea too! Also the water tank is a little hard to get out.Maybe we are being too gentle with it, but you do just have to give it a little extra pull. The adjustable drip tray (in front) is great.I just make my latte to go in a travel mug.The ability to switch from frothing the milk - which is very fast - to immediately making the espresso it my favorite feature.

Overall this is an excellent machine, makes great espresso, easy to use, and looks great too!

Senseo SL7810/65 Single-Serve Gourmet Coffee Machine, Black Review

Senseo SL7810/65 Single-Serve Gourmet Coffee Machine, BlackFor the most part I love the coffee that comes out of my Senseo. Unfortunately there's too little of it.

Before you start railing against over-sized everything, look at your coffee cup. I bet it's a 12 ounce cup, or at least a 10. A 4 oz cup is an espresso cup, tiny, great for espresso, too small for coffee.

So, it takes 2 pods to brew an 8oz cup. I've lived in Japan, and it'd be perfect for the way they drink coffee, but not the way people seem to drink it in the states. Mug in the morning to get going, mug mid day to keep going. Two "cups" of coffee would mean using six senseo pods in a day, every day.

The coffee is delicious, rich, soft... yes its crema. Very yummy. But it costs roughly 40 cents per 8oz, depending on which pods you buy and where.

My buddy gave me his Senseo machine because it was impractical to fill a travel mug with it, and it only filled his coffee mugs (12oz) 2/3 with the 8oz max pour (yes, you could do multiple runs, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a pod system?)

So I like the coffee a lot, but the servings were too small, the water reservoir too small, and the coffee too pricey. Great espresso machine, not so great coffee machine.

I've stayed with a pod system, but switched to Keurig. Their K-Cups are roughly the same cost, but you get a lot more variety, and more coffee per pod. 12oz instead of 4oz. Also, you can do tea and even fill a mesh pod with your own coffee.

Keurig has a better system with about the same upfront cost, same pod cost, but you get more coffee, more conveniently, and it tastes great.

Nespresso C100 Espresso Machine, Essenza Single Serve Review

Nespresso C100 Espresso Machine, Essenza Single ServeAfter a few days of use here are my comments for the C100T and Aerocinno. I am using the combo in a small office setting. The no mess of the espresso machine is great. The shots are really good and consistently good. The machine is very simple to use. Fill w/ water, turn on drop in espresso capsule, push button, and you are done. The only drawback I can mentinon is the capsules must be ordered from nespresso directly. In terms of cost they are significanlty more expensive than premium whole bean or ground espresso roast coffe (lavazza, petes, starbucks, etc.). So with regards to the espresso machine it is perfect for my office due to the no mess and no fuss cup of esspresso. Honestly, I love it. But in my home I will be keeping my Starbucks barista espresso machine due to the fact that it will take any espresso and at home it is easy to clean. The aerocinno is ingenious. It is the perfect compliment for any espresso machine with one caveat, the servings that it can make are only for one so if you are preparing multiple beverages are large single servings it must filled multiple times. If you overfill it, it will make a mess spilling over the sides. I am considering getting one of these for the home too due to the ease of use in comparison to the steamer attached to my espresso machine. In conclusion, I do reccomend this combo highly with the points mentioned above in mind.

Jura-Capresso ENA5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Centers Review

Jura-Capresso ENA5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso CentersCapresso Jura-Capresso ENA5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso machine.

I bought my machine in February and followed that up with the purchase of a two stage frothing nozzle.
All was well for a couple of days, when the nozzle flew off into the milk, splashing it everywhere and blasting steam out as follow up.
This despite stripping down the nozzle after each use and cleaning it with the brushes provided.
After this happening several times, Ireturned the unit to the "Coffee Shop". I was informed after a week that it was a cleaning problem. There was nothing wrong with the machine!!!
They would return the machine to me on payment of £128.
I accept that part of this charge is supplying a container since I had made the error of destroying the original (who has space for all that sort of stuff?)
They won't budge on this and despite having a lot of customers they informed me who had experienced the same problem.
It would seem to me to be yet another design fault since the fit of the nozzle onto the machine is by a soft rubber connector.

But it seems the customer is in the wrong and all these customers had not cleaned their nozzles sufficiently well.I don't think so!

Best not to buy this machine if you intend to use this frothing nozzle.

The ENA5: A Stylish and Compact Bean-to-Cup Experience
Less than 9-1/2 inches wide, the Swiss-made ENA is the world's slimmest automatic coffee center, with an intelligent space-saving design that ties into today's decor trends. The ENA 5 is first with a unique height-adjustable spout that rotates 180 degrees, giving the user the choice of brewing through a single or dual coffee spout.
It is also the only model in the ENA line that comes with two frothing systems: the Dual Frother Plus for traditional frothing by injecting steam into a pitcher of milk, and the frothXpress Plus System, which automatically froths or steams milk into the cup.
Energy Savings and Easy Brewing
Not only does the ENA 5 offer the incomparable flavor of high-pressure-brewed crema coffee and espresso-based drinks, it has also been cited for its eco-friendly features for saving energy. Unlike many countertop appliances, the ENA draws no energy whatsoever when the machine is off but still plugged in. The patent-pending Smart Zero Energy Button lets the machine finish any beverage already in progress and then completely disconnects from the electrical outlet. For additional energy savings, the machine can be switched to Energy Save Standby Mode reducing power consumption up to 40 percent.
Brewing is easy with the rotary dial with a built-in push button on the top of the machine. Programming the ENA is simple and intuitive, with the text display as a guide. The multi-color clear text display features easy-to-read alphanumeric text. The background is green when the machine is coffee-ready, red when action is required, and yellow in programming mode.
Feature-Packed
The ENA collection is the first in the Jura-Capresso line to feature a see-through bean chamber visible on top of the machine, romancing the beauty of fresh coffee beans. A built-in five-level conical burr grinder grinds the beans right before brewing for optimal taste. This high-performance grinder can be adjusted for regular or oily beans from fine to coarse simply by turning the chrome adjustment ring while the grinder is running. ENA machines can also brew pre-ground coffee for those who prefer decaffeinated or other specialty coffee blends.
Like all Jura-Capresso models, the ENA collection features the patented variable-volume brewing unit, which ideally prepares between 1 and 16 ounces of coffee. Because fresh, pure water is an essential element of great coffee taste, the ENA features the CLEARYL Plus Water Filter that removes impurities and reduces scale deposits in heating elements. This filter prevents disruption of coffee flavor by transforming hard tap water into water that is pH-neutral balanced. La Pavoni PPG-16 Professional Gold-Plated 16-Cup Espresso Machine, Brass Review

La Pavoni PPG-16 Professional Gold-Plated 16-Cup Espresso Machine, BrassI have owned this machine (8-cup, chrome) for over ten years and everyday when I make my morning cappuccino I love it more. You can spend more for a machine that measures the coffee, tamps it, pulls the water through and steams the milk for you, but you can tip the kids behind the counter at Starbucks and they'll do the same thing.Making espresso should be a little art and a little science and this machine an impeccable balance of the two. If you aren't the kind of person who takes joy in mixing the perfect martini, making a risotto that whispers with flavor, or whipping a meringue to impossibly tall peaks, this probably isn't the machine for you.

The La Pavoni is for the person who will find tremendous joy in going to the lengths required to make a perfect cappuccino by hand everyday. (And don't bother using anything less than Illy Cafe coffee in it.)

Urnex Cafiza, 20oz powder Review

Urnex Cafiza, 20oz powderThis is amazing stuff - it only takes a little powder to get a lot of coffee stains off of equipment. It also doesn't leave a flavor behind. When I first used this I was working as a barista in a bookstore and was amazed at how quickly the powder removed a day's worth of coffee grunge from our espresso machine and coffee pots. The only trouble we ever had with it was when we used too much powder - then the powder didn't fully dissolve and had to be wiped off.But even then it didn't affect the taste of the espresso the next morning.I would say for home use, you probably don't need more than a half teaspoon to clean out a coffee pot.I will probably purchase some once it comes back in stock!

Breville BES250XL Cafe Venezia 15-Bar Stainless-Steel Espresso Machine Review

Breville BES250XL Cafe Venezia 15-Bar Stainless-Steel Espresso MachineI've had two of these units now.The first one stopped heating water after 3 months.I don't mean it didn't get hot enough...I mean it didn't even get above room temperature.Breville USA support promptly sent me a prepaid mailer to send the unit back to them and equally as promptly sent me a new one.Now after having that one for three months it will not power on...at all.Again, Breville USA has offered to send me a new one, which I'm waiting on.This will be three of the same unit.

Sigh...Don't waste your hard earned money on this, you WILL be disappointed.

I would rate it ZERO stars, but the site won't let me.

This increased pressure expands the beans and helps eliminate air pockets, which allows the appliance to extract more crema for a rich, smooth-tasting coffee. When it's time to produce steam for frothing milk, the espresso machine provides a thermocoil heating element that increases the water temperature, a 45-degree pivoting steam wand with a stainless-steel frothing attachment, and a froth enhancer and stainless-steel jug for barista-style results. After frothing, its Auto-Purge function returns the water temperature to the optimal level for brewing. Other thoughtful details include a 91-ounce removable water tank, 4-1/2-inch head elevation to accommodate full-size mugs, and a warming tray on top of the machine that can warm up to six espresso cups. A combination tamping tool and measuring spoon comes included. Housed in durable stainless steel with a refined finish, the espresso machine measures 8-1/4 by 9 by 13 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

La Pavoni EPC-8 Europiccola 8-Cup Lever Style Espresso Machine, Chrome Review

La Pavoni EPC-8 Europiccola 8-Cup Lever Style Espresso Machine, ChromeI bought one of these a couple of months ago and although it is a bit expensive it is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.Itlooks great. It is so well made, it feels like it will last forever as itis so simple, no electronics to break down no plastic bits to break off. You get a huge amount of control over the way the coffee tastes, it's allin the speed of lowering the handle and the tightness of grinds. It takesa few attempts to get it right but once you've worked it out you'll neverlook back.

Gaggia Espresso Pure Espresso Machine, Black Review

Gaggia Espresso Pure Espresso Machine, BlackWe purchased this machine just after Christmas, and have fallen in love with it since then.We were looking at another, better-looking espresso machine, but were advised to get the Gaggia by some friends. This is our first REAL espresso machine, I had a Mr. Coffee machine years ago that worked all right, but the Gaggia Pure is head and shoulders above that one.It makes great espresso, although we are still working on getting great crema out of it...sometimes we do, sometimes we don't (this could easily be our fault). The frothing nozzle is also great, and although it's not as fancy looking as the all-stainless model we nearly bought, it is still a nice looking machine.
Negatives: no warming tray, and the first shots take awhile as the machine has to warm up first. This might be true with most machines, and it's not a big deal for us.We start it up, prep the milk and cups for a few minutes, come back and its ready to go. Subsequent shots go much quicker.
We would definitely buy this machine again.

La Pavoni PAB-16 Espresso Si Black Automatic Espresso Machine Review

La Pavoni PAB-16 Espresso Si Black Automatic Espresso MachineHave had this espresso machine for several months now.Researched a lot before buying and believe this is a great machine for the money.Performs well.Makes a great shot of coffee, assuming you are using great espresso beans.Looks good on the counter, altho not a sexy as the more expensive machines. Not too noisy.Only major negative:Not a lot of clearance between the machine and the drip tray - can't use anything taller than a cappuccino cup. Also, machine does drip a bit after you stop brewing.
Consider getting a good burr grinder to go with it.I highly recommend the Capresso Infinity.
Takes a 53mm tamper size.

Bosch TCA6001UC Benvenuto B20 Thermoblock 15-Bar-Pump Fully Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Bosch TCA6001UC Benvenuto B20 Thermoblock 15-Bar-Pump Fully Automatic Espresso MachineAfter years of use, I replaced my Saeco machine with the Bosch B20.I did a lot of research, and I think this is a great machine for the money. It is fast to start up, and it makes great coffee and espresso. The steam rod/hot water dispenser is also top notch. The Germans do a great job engineering a great boiler.Water is super hot and there is no wait.If you make tea, it is a lot faster than waiting for a kettle.

I never had any customer service issues, so I cannot really address the machine from that angle.Finding the cleaning pods was not that hard, IMHO.

The only complain I have is that the water tank is a small, and must be refilled often if you drink a lot of coffee or make a lot when you have guests.

Borosilicate glass is a strong heat-resistant glass traditionally used to make scientific lab glass.Stronger than traditional "soda-lime" glass, borosilicate can be used for everything from drinkware to cookware.Borosilicate glass substitutes boron oxide in place of the soda and lime used in everyday glassware. The boron oxide acts as the glue holding the silicate together.Due to small size of boron particles, the glass is held together tighter, resulting in a stronger, lighter glass.Borosilicate glass doesn't need to be as thick as traditional glass to be just as strong due to the bonding capability boron oxide.Borosilicate is simply a different type of glass that is resistant to temperature swings and scratching.Because the particles are held together so tightly, borosilicate glass is resistant to temperature swings,In addition to being dishwasher safe borosilicate will not become cloudy over time; you can rest assured that after 1,000 cycles, the glass will be as clear as the day you bought it.
